The Copa America Centenario has finally arrived. It’s match day in the United States as the USMNT are set to take on Colombia in the tournament’s opener.
It’s a huge test for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side as Colombia are ranked No. 3 in the world in the latest FIFA rankings. They boast some of the most talented and athletic players in the world, led by Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez.
Colombia will undoubtedly be the toughest test of the group stage for the Americans as Costa Rica and Paraguay await afterwards. The U.S. will be itching to get their Copa off to a successful start to make their path to the knockout stage a little easier to travel.
As tournament hosts the U.S., alongside Mexico, were handed automatic qualification, resulting in Klinsmann‘s side featuring mainly in friendly competition in the build up to the competition.
The Stars and Stripes have had mixed results in recent times, with 2016 proving more fruitful than the late period of last year. USA have won seven of their last nine matches in all formats, drawing once, per Soccerway.
This run of results came off the back of a torrid run of displays including five defeats in six matches, culminating in a fourth-place finish in the Gold Cup and a 3-2 defeat in the CONCACAF Confederations Play-off against Mexico.
